Why do buses run on diesel engines?

Diesel powered engines use less energy. I couldn't find a mention of the a gas powered bus (because it would be mad to build one), but according to this page regarding RVs (and an MOTORHOME is the most similar thing to some bus I could think of which runs on gas or even diesel), Reasons to buy a Diesel-powered Coach RV or Diesel engine Pusher Class A Mobile home a gas RV lasts 5. 5 mpg, the diesel averages 7. five mpg. If you're driving all day long, like a bus, that's going to really make a difference.

Diesel engines are also easier (in some ways) -- they don't have the complex electric system that gas motors need to make a spark, an excellent they go wrong, they're more difficult to fix. That's OK if you are a bus company, you might have people who know how to fix them. (I'd do some maintenance to the gas powered car, I more than likely touch my diesel car).

Diesels cost more to buy, however that is negligible compared to gas costs when you're driving just as much as a bus.
