Diesel cars: Is it time to switch to a cleaner fuel?

Within the 1920s, pregnant women were motivated to drink Guinness to increase their own iron intake.

For decades i was all told to avoid greasy butter and eat artificial margarine. Both pieces of wellness advice have since already been discredited.

We are now studying that millions of motorists that have bought diesel cars thinking they were less harmful to the surroundings have been equally misguided.

Diesel powered cars emit less co2 (CO2) than their petroleum equivalent, we were told. Actually not only are CO2 emissions almost identical on average, but in reality produce large quantities of other contaminants linked with thousands of premature fatalities.

Carmakers say they have already used action to reduce emissions significantly, while regulators are beginning in order to acknowledge the problem, but the problem remains enormous.

The reason is easy: about half of all cars presently sold in Europe are diesel powered powered.

As Greg Archer at Brussels-based think-tank Transportation & Environment says: "The car industry is battling to keep selling diesel since it has invested so greatly in the wrong technology".
