“It doesn’t smell and there’s no soot, but a lot of power at a low rpm,” Helmick said in a statement. “When sailing downwind, there are no diesel fumes, which is uncommon on most sailing vessels. The 4JH57 is very efficient, clean and incredibly quiet. Since it has the same footprint as my older engine, it was easy to install.
The new Yanmar 4JH57 sailboat engine offered by Mastry Engine Center is Tier 3-compliant and offers direct-injection common rail technology. “When sailing, I like to go 7 knots so if I’m going less with just the wind, I turn on the engine,” he said.” The 4JH57 uses less than a gallon an hour, and I can keep power aboard. Mastry is great, too. Anytime I pick up the phone to call anyone there, I know there’s over 100 years of Yanmar experience at my disposal.”
In addition to the 4JH57, Yanmar also introduced three other models to the JH family, the 4JH45, 4JH80 and 4JH110. They deliver 45, 80 and 110 mhp, respectively, with a rated speed of 3,000 or 3,200 rpm.
The engine has the same footprint as its predecessors, the 4JH4E, 4JH4 AE, and 4JH5E, in an effort to simplify installation on new boats and repowers.
The direct injection common rail technology helps the 4JH57 meet stringent Environmental Protection Agency Tier 3 requirements. Through this technology, particulate emissions are reduced by 40 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by 20 percent.
Production associate at Calcutta Marine, custom boatbuilder and sailor Robert Helmick used the 4JH57 on his Endeavour 42 center cockpit sloop.
