M4 Safety Car’s Water Injection Cooled Engine on Display in Geneva - Live Photos

The big deal about this car is its engine. While last year we also had an M4 used as a safety car in the superbike competition, this time around, the exterior remained the same, the changes happening under the metal. This is the first time BMW is using such technology, even though the concept has been known for quite some time. However, the technology prevented us from using it on road-going cars because there were too many variable to keep in mind. Basically, if you get the mixture of water and air wrong, you can irreparably damage your car.

On the outside, things look basically the same. The complete M Performance works were used, including the front splitter, side sills, sticker, rear wing, the whole nine yards. Even the interior wears more carbon fiber than should be allowed, all in the effort of reducing the weight as much as possible.
It’s under the bonnet where our attention is drawn however. Or where it should be drawn anyhow, if the engine wasn’t also put up on display on a stand right next to the car.
On it, we can notice the new water cooling injection system that is supposed to work wonders for performance. What it basically does is cool the intake air even further before entering the engine, thanks to a steady stream of water vapors sprayed by the system.
The water used for these purposes is stored in a reservoir located in the boot that should be refilled every five petrol tanks, no matter of the driving style. Probably the most anticipated world debut in BMW’s stand was the new M4 Safety Car for the MotoGP championship. Even though this is not a production vehicle, the technology it has on-board is enough to make your jaw drop. Oh, and the other world premieres simply fade by comparison, especially the 2 Series Gran Tourer.
